Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student just had a percentages test, so we brushed up on algebraic computation and the distributive property. This is a challenging topic for the student, especially when it comes to solving a problem (rather than just simplifying equations). We will continue to work on this particular area in addition to her current class material."
"The student has a quiz tomorrow over what they've studied so far in Chapter 4 (mostly integration) and she also has a graded homework due tomorrow. We worked through a couple of homework problems together and I checked the problems she had done on her own. We also went over some lingering questions she had for the quiz."
"During today's lesson, we started with a short quiz I prepared. It has verb conjugations, vocabulary of vegetables and of colors. The student did fairly well on his vocabulary. The student also practiced saying his phrases and today we really broke down pronunciation and vowel sounds. I had him practice saying difficult words by only pronouncing the vowel sounds in the word, not the consonants. Then add in the consonants after he has said the sounds over and over. This seemed to improve his pronunciation greatly and I hope he keeps up with this exercise and slows down when he is reading or speaking."
"The student and I discussed his performance on his last Physics test. We discussed possible reasons for the disconnect between his success in the sessions and his performance on the exams. He will need to do well on his final exam to replace the lowest test grades with higher scores. We looked at more of the moment of inertia and angular motion concepts. We also explored rolling with and without friction."
"The student had received his actual test answers from his ACT test in June, so we reviewed his English section. Overall he did pretty well! He needs to pay attention to detail and make sure he's answering the correct question. He then took a timed practice science section, which when graded. It was a fairly difficult set of questions, but his approach was good and he was able to narrow down to two choices on all the questions he didn't know. We then reviewed the Reading section from the June test. He will take another practice ACT before our next session so we can see his progress and hit any weak areas during our final two sessions."
"The student earned a 99% on a math assessment test based on the math packet that she did this summer. She then completed the homework for next class and worked problems on the next four sections. She is well ahead of her class. Her mother told me she may be placed in a higher-level math course."
"The student and I continued our work with grammar. He showed an increased ability to do the work at the end of the session. We will continue to practice this later in the week before his test on the 9th."
"The student has a quiz today (Friday) so we completed a review worksheet of all topics that he would be quizzed on, which include classification of and addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of polynomials and monomials. He is comfortable adding and subtracting polynomials but still has some confusion regarding order of operations with more complicated polynomials. He did say that he feels very confident going into the quiz."
"The student and I continued to work on her handwriting. I had her write a how-to paper in cursive and we reviewed some letters she has trouble remembering. She was a little reluctant to write the essay on her own, but did a good job planning what to write and using her letters correctly. I can tell her handwriting is improving."
"This session the student and I decided that his reading comprehension and vocabulary section needed the most work. We began to systematically and painstakingly work through these parts in order to identify the portions where he struggled. We noted though that while this part may not be his first language, once he gets warmed up he does very well. Our goal now is to improve accuracy and from there, speed will come."
"During this session the student and I went over graphing and identifying the equations for circles and parabolas. We reviewed how to write the equation for the circle that is only described in word form."
"This was our last session before the exam. We went over a few questions the student had had during our last session; then, we went over two sections together, and finished with a simulated timed practice section."
