"I truly believe that every student can become a good writer with individual attention and encouragement. In school I was (and still am) a bookworm, and one who sincerely enjoys helping others to grow in knowledge. As a veteran test-taker I can help with college entrance exam test prep (ACT, SAT, and the subject tests), using both conceptual understanding and test-specific strategies to raise scores. From my own experience, I know that scores can go up significantly with studying and tutoring—I raised my own SAT math score from 540 to 700, so it can be done. My teaching style is focused on engaging the student and using their own unique ...

"More important than such external measurements, however, is the individual student's knowledge that he or she has come into possession of, and internalized, a set of tools useful for further learning. I've edited five books for Duke University Press, and I have also taught college. My students find me friendly and approachable, and I love teaching. My undergraduate degree is in classics (Harvard), for which I wrote an honors thesis on the Odyssey of Homer. I have graduate degrees in anthropology and library science, and I've completed four semesters of Ph.D." ...

"I recognized this skill in my junior year of college, when I took non-traditional organic chemistry. This course differed from standard organic chemistry classes in that it was based on small (4-person) groups of students who taught each other the science that they needed to know, with lectures given only once a week. For both semesters, I led my group, initiating discussions and figuring out answers to others' questions. I learned that my greatest strength in teaching others is my ability to see things from their perspective, and to tailor what I was trying to teach to that perspective. That experience taught me that anyone can learn ...

" No matter what anyone studies, to know where to go next one must know what came before them. I have studied abroad in Italy, loving every minute of it, and believe that it made me not only a better student but also a better teacher. Now, after my experiences in Italy, I am better equipped to teach ancient history having truly experienced the physical remains of such an amazing civilization. When Im not in school or working, I enjoy playing and watching sports (love my Wildcats!), reading a good book, going hiking or just plain being outside. ." ...

A photo of Derek who is one of our Tucson Social studies tutors
"I tutored a variety of academic subjects, including English and History. I also developed extensive experience in test prep for the PSAT, SAT and the AP exams. As a tutor, I constantly try different hooks that might pique the interest of the student. For example, some students are interested in real-life applications of the subject; some like clever metaphors and mental pictures; some are very motivated by extrinsic rewards, like a good test score, while others do better when they can forget the test and focus only on the subject. In my free time, I like to jam with my roommates (I play the piano). I just got back from a year abroad in Germany ...
