Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was the student's and my first session together, so we concentrated on evaluating his strengths. The student has spent a good deal of time with his school in test prep, so we need to take a slightly different approach. We looked over some math problems he had problems with, and I asked the student to complete an ACT diagnostic test before next time."
"The student and I worked on the writing multiple-choice section this week. She had briefly gone through a section in our previous session. We talked through parallelism, dependent-independent clause matching, prepositional phrases, identifying subject-verb-object, and the difference between past and progressive tenses. I gave her practice questions related to each rule, and at the end we worked through a whole section. She was accurate in this final section."
"Today we covered more of the critical reading section of the SAT, particularly passages, as well as reviewed the other sections. The student was performing very well on most questions, especially the writing section questions. All we have left to cover is the essay portion of the SAT, which I would like to cover during our next session. After that, most of her preparation will come down to taking practice tests and preparing herself mentally for the SAT, although I would like to get in one last review session before the SAT itself."
"The student and I began working in the new book, particularly on math and grammar. The new book goes back to the basics to help her build a stronger foundation for tougher math problems down the road. We worked on pre-algebra and laws of arithmetic. I asked her to complete a math section for tomorrow."
"Today we started by reviewing the homework and going over previous problems. Then we reviewed the grammar rules for the SAT. We discussed the essay the student wrote for homework brainstormed some examples for future essays. Then he completed a timed writing section. We reviewed it afterwards. He also completed a Math section and a portion of a Reading section."
"We discussed the essay, some homework problems from the reading and writing section, verb tenses, and punctuation."
"Continued work on SAT reading. Student performed decently on homework, which had a particularly challenging passage. Worked on applying thesis to obscurely worded questions, avoiding charged language in answer choices."
"We covered the Writing section. The student primarily struggled with framing and argument, forming good sentences and directing those sentences at the thesis. I walked the student through strategies of how to approach the Writing prompt. I left them with three Writing prompts for tomorrow."
"We spent the session going over as much math as we could. We powered through as many math problems as we could muster. She would benefit from going through at least three math sections over the next week, and she can write an essay as well."
"The student and I had a productive session, the great majority of which was spent working on math. We started by going over her homework, and then continued on by working on various practice questions. She definitely has the tools she needs to get the answers. We continue to work on talking things step by step and building confidence. I assigned her to write an essay as homework."
"The student had prepared an essay, which we went over at the start of today's session. Her writing has definitely improved since we started working together, and what she is still struggling with, she is working hard to improve. We also went over a writing and reading section to keep reviewing her SAT skills. I'll see her again next week!"
"The student completed on his own about 2/3 or more of ch 13 in math, and we went over and he finished it as well as worked through about half of chapter 17 in grammar. We will revisit building vocabulary and continue with both areas of Math and English today. He says he feels "good" about the test being only 2 weeks away; we're going to meet 3x/wk. until the test."
