Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I finished up some final work on her two college essays for college. We mostly worked on how to end the essays on a strong note and made some final edits. She will be submitting the essays this weekend. Overall I saw a lot of improvements on the essays since we started."
"This session the student and I worked through his essay. We worked on answering the first part of the prompt, talking about academic interests in more detail. We also researched certain academic aspects which relate to his interests and the interdisciplinary nature of the school. Tomorrow, we will finish editing this essay by adding a paragraph on philosophy and inserting the already researched points on faculty and curriculum."
"Today the student and I worked on her remaining two scholarship essays for college. She had drafted one of them in a prior session, and I had asked her to take the time to figure out, based on that draft, what she was really trying to say, and that she already had a good story. I was so pleased to find out she had really given this serious thought, and after we reinserted her ideas into the essay all that was left was to work on the language. She is going to work on this for next Sunday. We also brainstormed the second essay and started drafting it together--it's an imaginative essay, and she did well putting her thoughts down on paper. Overall, a very positive session."
"We reviewed an essay the student has for one of her college classes. I assisted her with grammar and sentence structure. I also helped organize the essay. She has great ideas and events in her essay. Next we will work more on organization, grammar and sentence structure."
"During today's work, the student and I reviewed my suggestions to her graduate school entrance essays. We pushed towards developing a clearer structure to her argument, and targeted specific moments that her paragraphs could more clearly build towards a cohesive argument. Moving forward, she will be attending to larger, structural questions, while I will be providing sentence level suggestions. We are scheduled to meet again in advance of her deadline next week."
"We spent the bulk of this session cooperatively editing the final draft of the student's college essay. Our changes were nearly all for conventions, clarity and sentence fluency. He came prepared with a fantastic essay. We spent the remainder of our time reviewing the assessment practice test he had taken on his own."
"The student brought a nicely polished draft of his essay to our most recent session. The student seems happy with it. We expanded the conclusion to the second, shorter essay, and worked on retooling essays for other schools for the optional essays. We brainstormed ideas for another essay on the meaning of freedom, and he has some wonderful ideas."
"Today we put the finishing touches on the student's last essays for her college applications. She was over her word count in all of the prompts, so that was the main focus of today's session--cutting things rather than adding them!"
"We reviewed the last round of edits for some of their essays. Although I worked primarily with Student 1 for the first hour and Student 2 for the second hour, I reminded them both to apply the techniques and writing strategies to all of the essay that they are writing. I also let them know that they have both done a great job of following the essay-writing advice that I have provided and that they should not be so hard on themselves in this final round of editing. They had some minor remaining questions at the end of our session, so they will email me their final draft essays for my last look-over and comments."
"In our last session, the student and I worked hard to complete her college application essays that are due tomorrow. We reviewed one that she felt most comfortable with and then moved on to the more challenging essay. This essay was the one that we have worked on since the start of our sessions, and I am glad to say that after rewriting the outline then filling in the blanks, she has completed the last essay and uploaded it to the application online. I offered her help on her English essay as well, and we created a simple outline for her to follow; I also gave her suggestions on how to start and end the essay. One thing that I asked her to do was keep me up dated when she receives her acceptance letters."
"In today's session, the student and I finished his university supplement! We revised paragraph by paragraph, focusing on using active language, eliminating abstract nouns, and ensuring that we were getting the most "bang for our buck" in terms of word count (in other words, ensuring that every sentence was doing legwork). It's my hope that he will bear these things in mind as he works on his next supplement."
"The student had her finals this week. Her History final was on Monday, so on Sunday evening I helped her with the take-home essay that was due before the exam. The essay questions asked for themes present in American society today that were present in early American History. We had discussed her five chosen five topics in the last session, and in this session I reviewed and edited the essay that she had written. I edited some grammar and wordiness, but for the most part, I continued to help her develop some of these ideas."
