"The student and I began work on solving quadraticform polynomial equations. We began the very basics of substitution method this session."
"During our session, the student and I looked through his Algebra homework. In school he has been working on graphing quadratic equations using the calculator and by hand. We worked through a few different problems, doing them the way his teacher had assigned. First the student would find the axis of symmetry of the equation, then find both x and y for that line. Next, he would find two points for x above that axis, and two points below it, and the corresponding y points. Then he would plot all 5 of these points on a graph to visualize the graph. We then talked about how this was not actually a solution to the equation, but rather just the graph. Instead, we need to find x when y=0, which the student then did by hand. For some of the questions we checked these xintercepts by using the graphed equation on the calculator, and tracing the zeroes. He and I discussed how the solution to an equation, the xintercepts, and the zeroes of a function are all really the same thing. When a question asks for one of these things, you are really finding them all. He was able to do all of these questions very easily, only occasionally having trouble with number sense rather than the steps he should be taking to graph the equations."
"The student had a packet over state assessment testing review. He had a few questions he needed to answer, and a handful of questions he wasn't sure about."
"This was my first session with the student. We started by talking about how his class is going, and he said that he had struggled a lot with quadratic functions (from a previous unit) and wanted to review that in addition to his current work on the measures of central tendency. We began by working through his homework on interpreting box and whisker plots. He had a good general idea about these plots, but he got mixed up on how to use the information given to support his reasoning. It helped when I drew out a diagram to review the key components of the plot instead of having him look through his written notes (this is characteristic of a visual learner). When we finished his homework, he showed me that his teacher provided him with extra practice worksheets; so we decided to continue with this material. As we progressed through the problems, I could tell he was getting more comfortable with the material. By the end of the session he was able to explain how to interpret the data using appropriate mathematical vocabulary. At the end of the session I suggested that in addition to completing his homework, he take advantage of the additional resources that the teacher provides. In our next session, I plan to begin reviewing the materials from previous units with him."
"Today, the student had an assignment involving word problems using exponential functions. We discussed the different methods available to use, and she decided that the interestform equation was the one that made most sense to her. I had her label the rate, original value, and number of years for each equation, as well as whether it was growth or decay, before she solved the actual function. Using interestform, the student had little difficulty finding the correct answer for each word problem. I encouraged her to keep up the habit of labeling the different parts of the equation to make it easier to plug into the interest form on future assignments."
"Our session was spent reviewing (for the most part) Chapter 6 on factoring and solving equations using factoring. The focus was on finding the GCF first, and then trying to match a pattern such as "Difference of Two Squares." His new assignment is to look over the word problem section and see what he could do on his own.
We also rearranged our meeting schedule so that we meet on weekends. The schedule works out very well for both of us. We will be meeting on Saturdays and Sundays."
