Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Tonight the student and I went over the Reading section of the ACT. We went over the possible distracting answer choices (deceptive answers, the switch, extremes, and "too nice" answers). We also developed a strategy for the Reading section- find the lead words in the questions, find and underline these words in the passage, then skim and scribble 1-2 word summaries of the paragraphs in the margins. Then go back and answer all of the questions. We talked about the importance of ordering the passages in the beginning and discussed the structure of the section. Together, we did two passages together using this approach, and answered the coinciding questions ."
"Both students continue to progress in their ACT knowledge. They completed the homework and scored pretty well. They noted that the natural science passage was the most difficult; we discussed not being rigid in the order of passage selection, but glancing at each passage to determine which ones seem more and less interesting. Most of today's session was spent on an introduction to the Science section. We discussed the graphs/charts, experiments, and dueling scientists types of passages. We discussed independent vs dependent variables, and the graphs of various relationships between variables. I then had the two do three science passages to get used to the format. They performed pretty well, although they'll need to get used to questions which involve a two-step process of reading different tables or the passage text plus the table. To finish the session we did some math, specifically geometry. We worked on triangle, quadrilateral, and circle problems. For next time I assigned the two homework in English, Science, and Math."
"We started our review with the science section, and we will continue practicing science problems to increase the student's comfort level with this section. In addition, we worked through some of the English section -- she is strong with grammar. Overall, I see promising signs of growth from her."
