Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student's mother had downloaded a copy of the 5th grade assessment test and asked that we spend some time on it. The student was eager to do so. He did a reading passage during our session. He read silently and answered the questions with very few questions to me. After, we checked the answers, he had 8/10 correct. He'd really been absorbed by the story and had a full understanding. The questions that he missed were inferential, so we'd spent some time reviewing the meaning and interpretation needs of inference and will do more each future session."
"Continued lessons on reading comprehension and building vocabulary. The student's school reports show that she has increased her comprehension from 65% to 95%."
"The student's teacher relayed that she would like the student to focus on reading comprehension with an emphasis on summarizing. We briefly revisited the science reading from last week, noting the main idea and key vocabulary. The student was able to recall what she read and define terms. We spent the majority of the session taking turns reading aloud from The Sisters Grimm. We talked about strategies to build fluency and emphasized reading with appropriate intonation and inflection. Additionally, we reviewed the purpose for summarizing, as well as what should be included. We reviewed the "5 W's" and created a graphic organizer to help sort key/main details as we read. During reading, we incorporated deep breathing/belly breaths and spent most of the time standing, which seemed to help the student focus. She shared that she's been using these same strategies with success at home and at school. We did a few additional "Brain Gym" exercises and I intend to create a "Brain Gym" exercise kit for her and her mother to use at home as they see fit. I suggested that she continue to use a similar type of graphic organizer to jot down notes as she's reading to see if it does help her remember more, vs. paging backward through the book or text to try to piece together what was read last time."
