Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered limits and I taught the student how to take the derivatives of a function. For chemistry, we went over pH/acids/bases. She had a better understanding of the material after the session."
"The student continues to work on conic sections with their various formulae. She is ahead of the class in doing the homework."
"The student and I reviewed systems of equations and matrices for her test. We worked on solving systems using matrices and row operations, which simplified the substitution. At first, she was a little unclear on some of the rules for matrix row operations, but she was more comfortable after a couple of practice problems. We also clarified the difference between row-echelon, Gaussian elimination, and Gauss-Jordan elimination. We briefly covered matrix multiplication, and matrix minors/cofactors. I gave her some simple ways to graphically organize the matrix multiplication and the minor matrices."
"The focus of our session Monday was preparing the student for her Chapter 5 test on Tuesday. We began by completing the Chapter 5 review. We also finished a review of the homework for Chapter 5, followed by a review of a homework assignment from Chapter 6. The student showed mastery of the chapter. Her biggest struggle was solving the more complicated trigonometric identity problems. I showed her a few techniques for successfully expanding and simplifying these expressions. Our focus tomorrow will be completing the homework for Chapter 6."
"The student began working on ellipses this week. She was intimidated by them at first, but once we got into a strategy for solving problems and went over definitions for all of the variables it was simple for her. She was able to complete her homework assignment with minimal help. Her math teacher is going to email her the final review so we can begin studying for that. Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday evening."
"The student and I covered a few different topics from his previous test and other practice problems from the book. We started with probability and permutations, then moved on to some trigonometric identities and proofs. We tackled a few matrix problems as well to end things off. He is a bright kid and just needed some clarification in a few topics where the teacher didn't present the subject matter properly, and I was also able to give him some extra tips that will help him as he moves forward in the rest of his pre-calc topics. He had a positive and very motivated attitude and was a pleasure to work with. I gave him a few suggestions of things to do that will help him solidify some of the concepts, so if you want to ask him to see if he practiced his unit circle shortcut or started making his reference sheets, I believe these both could be very handy! Thank you for the opportunity to work with him, and I hope that I have the chance to work with him again in the future."
