Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on and used the student's multiplication table in math, as we practiced applying the PEMDAS mnemonic for her order of operations problems. We spent quite a time reviewing rules for long and short vowel phonics through a puzzle, and transferred that knowledge to practicing her vocab words on a recently returned homework. She will finish the phonics puzzle. She reviewed past input/ output math problems and started current homework on the same type of problems. These require finding the rule, writing the number equation with the variables x and y, solving or completing the remaining values in the input/ output charts, and graphing the same values. We reviewed a math problem and algebra solving for one variable."
"I have taken steps back from math with both students. I have begun working with both of them, still separately, on reading comprehension strategies, writing style, and punctuation. Both girls are very strong in math skills and well prepared for their next course. However, I feel they need focused learning on reading and writing in order for them to have a foundation on which they can learn future skills."
"The student and I started by working on some long division problems for her math class. We then switched to social studies, for which we reviewed a study guide on the Northwest passage and Henry Hudson's explorations. We also discussed a language arts assignment covering compound subjects and compound verbs. We went back to math at the end of the session."
"For our session on Thursday, I helped the student complete his earth science homework, which consisted of a short answer problem set organized like the short answer section on the exam. The student is competent in the area, but he needs to continue studying to minimize mistakes and better his ability to read and interpret diagrams and other visuals or texts in the earth science reference tables. Over the weekend we'll review for his English and global history exams, which are on Monday and Tuesday, respectively."
"This session's focus was on completing a preparation worksheet for the student's upcoming history final, which involved an analytical essay comparing three major events and their consequences in relation to WW2: the Cold War, the Chinese Communist Revolution, and the founding of the Israeli state. Each event was to be historically contextualized from the perspective of the conditions leading up to, during, and resulting from the War. The task required developing a thesis statement as to the long term effects, positive and negative, of these conditions as they affect contemporary society. In reviewing the historical details, possible ways of evaluating these effects became more clear, as local cultural and socio-economic developments were weighed against more comprehensive ethical considerations and their repercussions."
"I assisted the student in preparing for social studies final. We reviewed reading materials and discussed key concepts. I quizzed her on terms using the review sheet. We discussed her study plan to improve retention of the material."
