Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Because the test is this week, I wanted to give the student an intensive session focused on the listening and speaking sections. In a previous session, the student told me that she struggles with a particular type of speaking question - the type where you read a passage, listen to a speaker talk about the same topic, and then answer a question on the topic. This is a difficult type of question because you have to synthesize information from multiple sources and you only have a short time to think and then express yourself. We practiced several of these questions today. I had the student attempt the same question multiple times, and each time, she got a little bit better. We then moved on to the listening comprehension section. The student scored better than usual on the lecture based questions. She did very well on the conversation based questions and even got a perfect score on one test! I assigned the student a writing assignment for homework and we will go over it on Wednesday when we meet again."
"We started by reviewing in detail all the corrections to one of the student's essays. The students analyzed the new grammar and vocabulary points learned. These included countable nouns, gerunds versus present tense, and the conditional mood. We learned strategies for choosing the proper verb form, and how to use conjunctions, among other language structures. They were enthusiastic and attentive students. We then went on to read together one of the student's practice SSAT essays for structure and style. In the next lesson, we will continue with the analysis of grammar and vocabulary. We will also review their homework, which is to write essays for their applications to the online summer school offered by the University"
"This was my first meeting with the student, so I used this session as a sort of diagnostic exercise. I also wanted to allow the student to see the various types of questions that will be on the exam. He seems to be more comfortable with math, but struggles some with vocabulary and reading comprehension. I believe that this session was productive because he remained focused and interested in the material. We were able to explore a wide variety of questions because of his willingness to work. In future sessions, I will discuss testing strategy at length, but today I made an effort to only briefly mention tactics such as pacing and answer elimination. For extra practice, I introduced him to the online resources (which help immensely with vocabulary). I will begin to assess progress in the next few sessions. I am excited to move forward. Thanks."
