Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student learned the formula for the area of triangles and trapezoids. He then solved for the area of both triangles and trapezoids from a sample set of problems. Later, we played a Japanese math game."
"We reviewed a class video project script she had done, correcting and perfecting the script before she and two classmates shoot it. We reviewed Spanish spelling rules briefly, some vocabulary and then we worked with preterite: regular, stem changing, irregular. We translated some sentences, we used the preterite with several time expressions and at the end we did a listening and comprehension activity. She is focused, pays attention and asks sharp questions."
"This session the student was coming from a really long day and so I tried to make our work as interesting as possible. We went over a writing section where he showed that he understood most grammar rules but a few, at least during our session, he needed reminders on. I really hope that familiarity through practice will lead to him instinctually knowing which sentences need correction. We then did a brief overview of the essay and I asked him to do one for homework so I could review it next time and suggest improvement. Lastly we went over vocabulary flash cards...but this time putting the definitions in "his words," so that he could better internalize their meaning."
"The student worked on vocabulary from his SSAT practice book and then we reviewed common and proper nouns, irregular plural nouns, and went over his homework together. His parents and I are working together to help him prepare for seventh grade classroom etiquette. I'll keep a progress report of his study habits alongside his academic progress henceforth."
"Continued the packet that I made for the students. They love the hands on activities. We learned a song involving numbers and colors and they are getting better at writing. I have another packet ready for next time."
"The student and I continued to focus on reviewing Logic Games. I think we identified a key challenge for the student today, which is using the conditions of the game to construct diagrams for each individual question. We spent the entire session working on this, and I am also making this skill the focus of his extra practice before our next session. Overall, I was pleased with the student's tenacity today. I think our biggest win was when things started to click and he was anticipating rule violations."
