Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I went over the SSAT writing section she worked on since our last session. She chose to respond to the creative prompt and had an interesting story idea but struggled with the time limit. We discussed writing a focused response that reaches some kind of conclusion within the time frame, even if the whole story does not reach a conclusion. We discussed how her story would have been strengthened if she had added even one sentence at the end that in some way answered some of the questions raised by the earliest part of her story. We also talked about varying sentence structure. We then worked on an SSAT math section and continued our focus on tricks for reducing the need for long division and multi-digit multiplication. We've been really focused on working with division problems as fractions and proportions. We concluded by working on her preparation for her debate this weekend. We talked about how to track down and uses sources for her research. We also talked through very generally the issues raised by the debate in order to guide the research process."
"The student and I did more reading practice and a little bit of math practice. For reading we are focusing on becoming more familiar with the types of questions and how to quickly find the answers. She focused well and did a good job. We did one math practice test and she did well on that too. We will practice more reading and math, but for vocab it will be best for her to practice by making flashcards."
"Today we worked on the student's application essay for his boarding school. We had his first draft in hand so we worked off of that. I liked his essay concept a lot. We worked on brainstorming things he could talk about that showed a growth or change in his thinking based on his experiences. We found ways to work his stories about students into the new paragraphs showing his growth and development. He only needs to write one entirely new paragraph talking about his future goals. I think the essay has a lot of potential with a little bit of work and editing it will reflect his personal sacrifice and growth."
