Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student's homework was finding the amplitude, period and phase shift of trigonometric functions. He was then to use this information to graph these functions by hand, showing particular windows of their period. This is a particularly intricate exercise to learn for the first time and I wanted him to show more calculations rather than doing quick math in his head to figure out parameters for each problem, which leads to simple mistakes. He eventually got used to the idea of tracking the amplitude, period, phase shift and middle, high and low in the y-direction, as well as the "start" and "stop" of one cycle in the x-direction, according to the period and phase shift."
"During the session, we reviewed the trigonometric applications of word problems, with which he seems to be having a pretty good time. He is aptly answering most of the trigonometry questions without any error. He often recognizes without skipping a beat, the appropriate functions to use. The student is doing a solid job. I hope to see him again soon."
"The student and I reviewed for his midterm tomorrow. We went over trig values, the unit circle, logs, exact value, and trig concepts. He needed help in the beginning, but as we did more trig problems he was able to grasp the concept. He felt more confident in his work than he did in the beginning. One suggestion I gave was to write out the special angle chart before he started the exam so that he would not have to think about it."
"Today the student worked on her homework: Math: what is standard/letter/expanded form which number is bigger/smaller Reading: article about Labor Day, answering the 11 questions Grammar: what kind of sentences (exclamatory, question, command, statement), fragment of sentence"
"We worked on homework and test reviews, specifically working with radicals and fractional exponents. He has a test this Friday and I would like to go over any corrections that he needs to make on it. The student is getting much more confident in his math skills and his abilities as our sessions progress. He is making tremendous progress in our sessions."
"Today we worked more on equations of lines. I had the student look at graphs and then figure out the equations of the graphed lines. Then we practiced functions. I had her write functions from word problems, compare different functions, and then solve some fairly complicated functions. She did really well overall especially with the graphing."
