Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had our first meeting. It went very well. We went over some basic test-taking strategies and then spent time on the Critical Reading section. The first portion, Completing Sentences, relies largely on vocabulary, which for him is a plus. He also did well on the Reading portion, and we discussed some strategies for annotation that might help him improve his accuracy and efficiency."
"Great to see the student today. It looks like her SAT scores from October came out about 250 points above the placement test that I gave her! That's great to see. We'll work to continue improving those scores, especially math and writing, over the next couple weeks. Today we reviewed her official SAT test and went over the questions she missed. We also talked through some basic differences between the SAT and ACT."
"The student and I spent the session going through the writing diagnostic test he had completed for me. We analyzed his strengths and weaknesses, and we went through the questions he had missed. Next time we will look at grammar questions as well as improving paragraphs."
"The student and I worked through approximately 30 SAT math questions with a focus on geometry, probability, and algebraic expressions. She struggled with some of the geometry questions but otherwise did well. We also worked through several grammar/ vocabulary questions with a focus on concepts such as sentence placement, comma placement, and active versus passive voice. This was our final session before the SAT on Saturday."
"Another very good session with this student. We reviewed analogy types and strategies, then practiced analogies. We then switched to math and reviewed how to calculate slope of a line and how to determine the formula of a line. Finally, we covered the distributive property in formulas, and practiced this. He will continue to take practice tests."
"This session, the student and I reviewed the essay outline I had her generate, along with some vocabulary and sentence completion practice. We also covered some math concepts, including basic geometry and the coordinate plane--she struggled with these when we began working together, but has made significant improvements. We also practiced bubbling in her answers on an answer sheet, just so she could get a feel for the conditions of the real test. Overall, I think she is in great shape for the ISEE going into our last session tomorrow."
"We covered writing and vocabulary. I feel like the student could improve the most on the sentence completion questions, as she seems to have the hardest time with some of the vocabulary words. She had a great attitude as always. She has been a pleasure to tutor and I wish her the best of luck."
"Today we continued working on geometry including degrees of polygons, area of a cone, diagonals of polygons, and converting units. We also covered some algebra including distribution and factoring. They are new concepts, and it does take more time, but the student appears to be learning the concepts. I spoke with both parents to create a game plan, as test day is getting close. The student's father would like me to help the student with the reading and writing sections as well, so we will work on that tomorrow."
"The student and I reviewed English for two hours. She did a complete section and was able to score considerably above her baseline. Areas where she is still a little uncertain include subject-verb agreement, compound sentences, and general use of colons and semicolons (though she has improved here). Our next session will focus on the math."
"Quite a good session today -- we mostly spent the time reviewing math problems. We practiced solving polynomials by factoring, reviewed the difference of two squares, practiced solving systems of equations by way of two methods (substitution and elimination), and worked with proportions in multiple contexts: similar triangles and percentages. Lastly, we began our forays into trigonometry, starting with SOHCAHTOA and practicing finding sides from there."
"She is a bright student. She did very well on the diagnostic, but we still need to work on speed. She took almost twice the recommended time to do the problems. We went over an alternative approach to take on the Reading and Science sections. I've assigned homework on these sections, too."
"During these two sessions we covered the reading and math sections. The student has a great attitude and is already performing well on questions. She needs some additional practice on the math section in particular, but has improved since last week. She also has learned to use strategies to speed up her test taking. She should be taking diagnostic tests and practice tests when she gets the chance."
