Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I started covering the material for Algebra II. We reviewed exponents and the laws of exponents, subtracting, adding, multiplying, dividing. We did several practice problems on whiteboards involving complex problem solving. Finally we ended the session on dividing polynomials and how to do long division versus synthetic division. Next week we will pick up with synthetic division and learn more about radicals."
"Covered various topics concerned with Trigonometry. These topics included word problems involving real world situations, graphing trig functions, properties of special triangles, and basic trig equations."
"We looked over the student test results (the first practice SAT). Assuming a 9 or 10 on the essay, she would have scored a 2000, several hundred points above her last SAT score. We looked over her practice essay, and I recommended a brief three-part approach for improvement: 1. rewrite the essay using a less conversational tone and with a clearer thesis 2. practice outlines for essays 2-9 3. practice a full essay for test 10. The remainder of the time was spent on working through the math questions she'd missed on the practice test."
"The student and I reviewed the physics we went over last time (basic circuit elements and diagrams, volt-ohm-amp calculations), and then I introduced her to anti-derivatives and some of their uses (like area under a curve)."
"Worked on finding slope, graphing, and solving for a variable in order to find slope and y-intercepts. Understands material very well, just needed a refresher. Student is much better with multiplying and reducing fractions. "
"The student completed a summary assignment about an article. He is really improving in terms of presenting information in a very logical way. I am working with him on including more detail in his summaries and also helping him develop the good habit of looking back at the texts that he's read to glean more material for use in his "re-telling" of an article, report, etc.,"
"For this session we started doing practice problems on topics from earlier on in the semester to begin our review for the final. The student seems confident with this material so far, but we have only started looking at the first 3-4 chapters. For our upcoming sessions we will finish up with inter-molecular and intra-molecular forces and then spend the rest of the time reviewing the semester material for the final."
"The student and I reviewed the ACT practice test #4 that he completed over the weekend. He has highly improved in the English portion and scored in the 82nd percentile. He then completed the Science portion and did very well by scoring in the 88th percentile. We reviewed the 6 questions he missed and discussed additional test taking strategies for his ACT test on Saturday."
"Student 1 and student 2 both had online Spanish homework tonight, so we worked on that. It sounds like both of the guys are doing great in math, which is fantastic. Spanish is hard for student 1 sometimes but he did a good job with the stuff tonight for the most part. The hardest thing for him is keeping all the vocabulary straight, so we worked on that for a while."
"We worked through the homework for chapter 18. It is difficult to help her without her class materials in front of me, but I think we're making progress. We will continue to distill the information into an outline in preparation for the final test."
"The student and I reviewed the preterite vs imperfect past tense in Spanish, making a chart for the usages of each tense and reviewing examples out loud. We went over the rules for verbs ending in -ar, -er, and -ir and went over many exceptions for certain verbs. She said since our first session her grade in the class went up, so she has been making progress."
"Today I discussed with the student what he thought were the areas where he needed assistance with his 11th grade language arts class. He and I agreed that writing with more clarity and detail is what we will focus on. At this session, the student created a paragraph on the study of culinary arts. He also worked on context clues worksheets and worked on grammar worksheets."
