Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered anatomy and reviewed the student's homework on dividing polynomials using long and synthetic division. She showed relative mastery over everything we were doing which I was very impressed with. She was very receptive of my help with her studying and had a positive attitude and willingness to learn while we worked"
"The student and I covered rational zero theorem, conjugate zero theorem, solutions of cubic and higher order polynomials, synthetic division and long division procedure and their similarities and differences. We also looked at creating a polynomial given the real roots and/or complex roots, understanding that complex roots occurs in conjugate pairs and how it helps to create a polynomial function, multiplicity of zeros of a polynomial function, rationalization of denominator in a fraction involving complex numbers and/or radicals."
"Both students and I worked on solving equations. We discussed distribution when you have something like 3(x+4) and how when you distribute the 3 you multiply 3 by the x first and then the 4 to get 3x + 4. This will "undo" the parentheses and then you can add like terms together and isolate x and the constants in order to solve the problem. We also came across word problems which you have to translate the English into algebra."
"This session was primarily spent working on the student's algebra 2 project which involves graphically analyzing a real world parabola. We talked about computer programs for pictorial analysis, vertex form of a parabola, rules for exponents and operations on polynomials, and other topics that came up in the course of the project."
"We covered simplifying, adding, and multiplying radicals. Also, we covered how to make a radical fraction into a rational number. The student just would sometimes get numbers mixed up, but generally gained a better idea of how the concepts work. I taught her a more visual way to do the "FOIL" method."
"Went over chapter 5 on ratios and did a practice test. At the end we went over different tips and skills that will be helpful during the test. The student wrote out the steps needed in order to be able to get the correct answer for the different problems. He is doing great on this unit and seems to just need the confidence to do well. He was very receptive and ready to work when I arrived after the long break. He showed me the test from before break that we had been studying for and he received 21/22 points for it!"
