Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During today's session, the student and I continued to work through practice problems in the released SAT exams. She is extremely intelligent and inquisitive. To compensate, I will attempt to institute a more regimented lecture style in future sessions to keep her focused on the task at hand. Her math, reading, and writing skills are strong across the board, and I believe she has an equally high probability of qualifying for the program via any of the three. I have assigned her a timed mock exam over the break to establish a baseline diagnostic score for more targeted preparation."
"Yesterday was my second session with the student. I provided her with handwritten notes showing her how to solve difficult math problems from our previous session. We reviewed the problems and went through each one step by step. We then reviewed the critical reading passages and sentence completion sections she had completed as homework. Her vocabulary could use some strengthening. I also emailed her mother a list of commonly tested SAT idioms. I then had her complete a timed math practice test (section 8) on her own. We went over a few questions together, and I asked her to walk me through how she solved those problems. Since time management is an issue for her, I reiterated my suggestion that she not try to rush and solve every problem on the test, but to focus instead on getting as many easy and medium difficulty questions correct. I circled the questions she skipped on the math section and asked her to complete them for our next session. I also suggested she try and complete as many additional timed practice sessions as she can and that she read her SAT vocabulary book and study up on her comprehension of commonly tested SAT words. Since she will be back in school next week, she is going to talk to her mother about our scheduling for the next session."
"Today we looked at strategies for successful essay writing. We talked about the 5-paragraph essay format as well as strategies for paragraphs 1 & 4. We looked at how to pick pros and cons and how to structure sentences. I saw plenty of improvement. I'm leaving a practice essay for homework. We will work on speed moving forward."
