"We worked on Lesson 13, which was over asking for and giving directions. After the session, the student was more fluent in asking for/giving directions in Mandarin."
"The student and I practiced making sentences using "I like..." We went through "I like school, I like basketball, I like math." We then used the terms for basketball, math, and school to say "___ is fun." I also taught her how to say Happy New Year. We ran through her action routine quickly and practiced Happy New Year, then we reviewed the colors using the fish tank and reviewed some action words."
"The student is a quick learner. He is able to construct the sentences by using the words that he learned, which is very impressive."
"Today, the student completed his homework due 1/6 and studied for his dictation test on 1/6. The area where he was having difficulty was understanding questions in Chinese. He said it was because "he wasn't able to guess." We talked about how frequently guessing doesn't get him the right answer, and how it's important to look all the words in a sentence, not just the first word. When I helped him read the sentences one word at a time, he understood them immediately and was able to answer them."
"We first went over some translations the student did for homework. We then spent most of the rest of class working on his Chinese homework from school, which involved short answer and true/ false questions. We also worked on some of the grammar in lesson 4."
"Today we worked on reading comprehension Chapter 3 from Unit 1. I had him read through the passage and jot down new vocabulary like yesterday. I had him try reading some intermediate (middle-school) level reading exercises. We concluded today's session by having a practice conversation in Chinese that covered what he did yesterday, what he does after work and had him introduce to me a book he likes to read. Overall, he did pretty well."
