"The student and I covered some material that she had missed last week due to illness. She informed me that she has her first exam in 2 days covering 2 chapters concerning acid/base equilibrium and solubility. After we went over the material she had missed, we reviewed certain areas that she needed extra clarification with. When we went over the missed material, we specifically covered a few problems that dealt with comparing the solubility of two different salts in the same solution that contained fluoride and what adding fluoride from a soluble source would do to the solubility equilibrium, or the common ion effect. The student expressed to me that she understands solubility well and showed me how well she knew it by finishing the problem in less than 5 minutes. We next covered a problem that was very challenging, as it contained multiple topics in one concerning acid/base equilibrium. The topics included titration of a weak acid with a strong base, pH at equivalence point, pH at midway point, pH at various points on the titration curve and plotting the titration curve from these calculated pH values. The student struggled at first knowing how to approach each part of the problem, but found her stride when I would assist. She will need study by doing the more challenging problems that require her to combine multiple topics. After going through the missed material, we went over a few topics she needed clarification on: strength of oxyacids, the exact definition of equivalence point and midway point, when to use the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation, acid-base indicators, determining precipitate formation using the reaction quotient and the solubility constant. I told the student that I feel confident in her ability to get a good grade on this test, based on her grasp of the knowledge when we study and her overall work ethic."
"The student worked on a homework packet covering states of matter, phase changes, types of solids and inter-molecular forces. She understood the material really well and had a positive attitude about her upcoming test."
"Today we went over how to draw amino acids and find net charges when placed in a certain pH. The student's attitude was positive, like always. I gave her some easier methods for finding net charges."
