Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued working on the practice test packet sent home by his teacher. With guidance, he seemed to understand the story much better this time, though still struggled with the remaining questions. These questions were not "in text" questions but require the reader to think beyond what's explicitly stated. Working on "beyond the text" thinking will be one of our focuses from this point moving forward, including practice with inferencing."
"The first student and I worked on a phonics activity on concept words. She caught on pretty quickly and was successful with the activity. We reviewed previous concepts of synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, and context clues. We read from a novel called Justin Case. I encouraged her to find a book of her choosing for our next session. The second student and I worked on his reading project. We read two chapters together and he completed notes on the first chapter. He also completed his Lit activity due Tuesday. He still needs to complete a character study worksheet for class. The third student and I practiced writing letters correctly. We read words with short vowel sounds and created small sentences. We worked on the sight word "and.""
"The student and I began the session by constructing the vocabulary review game for which he prepared the flash cards. We will practice for 5 minutes at the end of each session, and he is welcome to practice as much as he wants between tutoring sessions. He must take each vocabulary word, and define it correctly 10 times before we will remove it and add a new word. He and I also read two more chapters of No Summit Out Of Sight. I then asked him to summarize the main character's summit of his first mountain. His comprehension of the text was evident through his summary, and it is clear he is confident at summarizing, with guidance. I will ask him to complete a summary more independently at another time. He and I are still working on reading with greater fluency and expression."
