SAT Verbal Tutoring review by Julie in Las Vegas, NV
Today we reviewed all vocabulary from prior sessions. The student adequately defined 80% of the words. Hopefully this can continue to improve. I also had him do some practice test sections on his own to see where he is still struggling. Overall he did quite well.

SAT Verbal Tutoring review by Laura in Las Vegas, NV
We had a good session today working on critical reading and writing for the SAT. Critical reading continues to be tricky for the student, but it's clear we've made some big breakthroughs recently! There are two very encouraging signs: 1) He knows when he's gotten a question right; there's a certainty about his answers. (He compared it to basketball when he knows as soon as he tosses the ball that he's going to score.) When he's chosen the wrong answer, he seems hesitant. 2) The student is almost always able to get down to the two best answers. If he's made an error, he's quickly able to correct himself when he thinks more about a question or when I point him to a particular moment in the text. This means that he's reaching a stage where he knows what he needs to find, he just sometimes misses it. As he and I have realized, this is usually NOT because he's not reading deeply enough, but because he's reading too deeply and is finding things implied, when he's looking for something that is stated or expressly supported by the text. This is a tricky distinction, but the student himself seems to be grasping it. The most frequent questions he misses are ones where the answer is somewhat vague and doesn't match what he thinks should be the answer. If we refine his elimination technique somewhat, ensuring that he eliminates the "bad" answers first, and the not-quite-right answers later, this should diminish. During the end of the session, we pivoted to the writing questions, where we returned to finding sentence errors after a long hiatus. He did well with the early questions, but resisted (as most students do!) the "no error" choice and struggled on some later questions. We discussed his technique: 1) look for obvious errors. 2) evaluate each option individually, considering the grammar issues at play (e.g. grammar tense, singular / plural pronouns, subject / verb, idioms, adverbs / adjectives, repetition etc.), 3) if there is not a grammar error (something that doesn't sound right isn't enough), choose "no error." In preparation for this, Tommy should review the list of possible errors that we made at an earlier session. If one of those errors isn't present, he should choose "no error" rather than point to something that seems vaguely off. The student let me know that he plans to take a full test (or as much of one as possible) in the next week; this would be great preparation as we head into the final stretch before the test. Practice is key to solidifying technique and locating lingering problem areas.

SAT Verbal Tutoring review by Suzanne in Las Vegas, NV
We began by reviewing questions from the previous exam. Then we focused the rest of the session on reading comprehension. We started with an exercise where he applied what he has learned to give advice to an imaginary student just starting to study for the reading comprehension session. Then we worked through several passages together, followed by a quiz at the end. The student did great!

SAT Verbal Tutoring review by Christopher in Las Vegas, NV
We did our usual broad coverage of the test, with special focus on essay, vocabulary, and grammar. The student has made good progress and I think he's on track for his targeted score on the May 2 test. I asked him to write a sample essay for our next meeting on Thursday.

SAT Verbal Tutoring review by Bryan in Las Vegas, NV
In this session, we reviewed the student's homework assignments. Next, we did a practice reading session and reviewed the answers. After this, we did some reading practice units. Finally, we did some spelling and vocabulary practice. His reading and writing skills are continuing to improve. It is evident he is doing his reading homework, and this seems to be helping. His homework for this week is to continue reading a half hour per day and prepping for finals.

SAT Verbal Tutoring review by Katharine in Las Vegas, NV
The student had a really wonderful last session today, and I think she's going to be very ready to take the SAT for the first time next week. We went over her homework, including a very well-written and clear essay. It's also evident that the student has taken a big leap forward with the reading questions. For a few of the practice passages, she completed each question without a single error. As always, she asks smart questions and seems to really understand the errors she's made once they're pointed out to her. This week, she can drill the types of questions she finds challenging-- and I wish her the best of luck next Saturday!
