Tutoring review by Brett in Woodbourne-Hyde Park, OH
Today we worked on chi-squared tests. She had just taken a test earlier in the day and hadn't yet been introduced to chi-squared in class, so nearly all of our session was introductory. I tried to be as broad and conceptual as possible in my discussion. Chi-squared testing is a hypothesis test just as she had been working on, but there are some important conceptual and theoretical differences. We talked about the fact that now we're dealing with two different variables--an independent and dependent variable--and that we are interested in measuring whether or not there is an association between the two. In order to illustrate this point, I spent a good deal of time discussing the concept of statistical independence, what that term refers to, how we can demonstrate independence of two variables, and how it works into statistics. After spending some time on the concept of independence, we then worked through the steps of performing a chi-squared test of independence. I had a few example problems that I used, and we slowly went through all of the steps. We discussed the different formulas for finding the chi-squared test statistic, your expected frequencies, and the degrees of freedom; we talked about what a contingency table or cross-tab is and how it's used; we discussed the differences between marginal, conditional, and joint distributions; we looked at the chi-squared table and talked about how to use it, and finally we discussed how to interpret and report results once you have performed the test. She will start dealing with chi-squared in her class in the upcoming days, but I think that our discussion gave her a good foundation and will help her understand the topic once she sees it in her class. Today's session went very well.

Then we covered the student's questions about problems on a review sheet for the final exam. I stressed formulas and techniques that the student needs to know for the final exam.

Tutoring review by Hannah in Woodbourne-Hyde Park, OH
In today's session, the student did review problems for her exam tomorrow and Thursday which consisted of graphing rational functions. As part of this, she had to find domain/range, asymptotes, critical values, and end behavior making most of these problems very long. I know she is very capable of solving these problems and she proved that once we started to break down each piece and solve the problem step by step. The key for the student is going to be her confidence; specifically, she has to remember to walk through each part of the problem and not try to tackle the whole thing at once.
