Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is showing continued improvement. This is especially evident in grammar; she missed few questions on the grammar section I gave her for homework. She is applying the methods well and remembering the sentence structures and phrases SAT writers prefer. For math, has become more open to trying new methods to solve problems. She especially is excelling with word problems. We also spent time talking more about the essay, noting the structure, length, and content of essays that receive high scores. We discussed examples she could store in her head for possible application to prompts. For homework, she will look at an essay prompt and brainstorm examples, and she will complete math and reading sections."
"We covered the SAT Writing section which included improving sentences, improving paragraphs, identifying sentence errors, English idioms in correcting sentences, and English vocabulary."
"We started today by going over the reading practice test that I asked the student to complete. We went through this test, and then completed a separate practice test for only passage-based questions together. I walked him through the reasoning behind each answer and some strategies for reading the passages, including reading in detail and deliberately remembering characters' names. When we finished the practice test, we moved on to discussing the essay. We discussed the five paragraph structure for essays, and we discussed making outlines. I then asked to him to read sample prompts, take positions, and come up with examples. We did this for a few prompts, and I suggested that he keep track of the examples he thinks of, because many could be used for other topics as well. Finally, I showed him some resources which explain how to write the essay, and I asked him to read them more carefully on his own time. I offered him a prioritized list of practice activities to complete over Thanksgiving break, time allowing."
