Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I alternated math and verbal work with the student at the session, and this helped him maintain interest in the material. In math, he is doing great at solving polynomials in both the (x-y)^2 and ax^2 + bx + c formats. He is also growing much more comfortable with shortcuts that allow him to solve for "bx" more quickly and to eliminate wrong answers from the choices given. He is finding a new challenge in reading comprehension; he is always able to narrow his choices down to two possible answers but sometimes ends up choosing the one that is "less" correct. I am helping him to get accustomed to the language used in presenting the question as well as the given answers, and how to eliminate poor candidates, while also weighing between two that seem equally likely. Depending on the question, the answer may be the more specific of the two, or the less specific - there are different factors to take into account when responding to each question, and instinct is sometimes the most helpful tool. We are meeting again this afternoon to continue our work from yesterday."
"Today, I really wanted to work with the student on the two areas where she could use more practice-manipulating equations and geometry- so I split the session in two to get a lot of focus on those areas. She did very well with the first half and made a lot fewer mistakes. I didn't give her the multiple choice options, so she really had to work through the questions without guessing. I had her walk me through how she solved problems, so we could fix any small mistakes. In the geometry section, she also showed improvement since the last time we worked on it. Overall, it was a good session. I will be sending a second practice exam along tonight."
"We first reviewed the student's math homework. I was very glad to see that she had gotten every problem correct. She correctly answered all 45 questions, and this was from her practice test book, which correlates closely with the actual test. Afterwards, we went over vocabulary. She got most of these questions correct as well. I left her with extra verbal and reading comprehension practice (to see if her reading comprehension is up to par with her math), and I look forward to our next session."
