"We went over some practice drills with synonyms and analogies. I allowed her to complete her lists, and once she was done, she was able to correct most of the mistakes she made, both on the synonym drills and on the analogies practice. With the remaining time, we ran through some math problems."
"This session we primarily focused on the math section of the test, but also reviewed test taking strategies and briefly looked at the English section of the test. For math, we went through two full length math sections of a practice test. Problems included ratios; computations with fractions, decimals, and percents; area, perimeter, and volume; order of equations; identifying patterns; and solving for x. The student is growing more comfortable and confident with the different types of problems, making it easier to choose a problem-solving strategy. Once he sets up a problem, he is very quick to use mental math and logic to find a solution. However, he is still struggling to set up certain problems, makes some mistakes in mental math, or does not answer the question that is asked. To set up the problem, we focused on finding all of the information that was hidden in the problem. To help with errors in mental math, I've encouraged the student to write down all of his work. Lastly, it is important to reread a question before marking an answer, to ensure that the work done answers the question that is being asked. We ended the session by answering some questions in the vocabulary and analogy section of the test. The student did exceptionally well in the vocabulary section. His Latin studies and love for reading are paying off! For analogies, we will need to look at the different types of relationships between words. However, he still did well."
"The concepts that we covered today were averages, rates, and some basic algebraic manipulation skills. The student is quite mathematically gifted. I believe with enough practice he can really do well on the SSAT."
