Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today's session allowed us to finish up our biotechnology chapter. We discussed PCR, Sanger sequencing, cloning, and stem cells. The majority of this material is memorization based, so there was not much to do in the field of quizzing. However, she appeared to understand all of the concepts. We will continue our look at the human genome this Saturday prior to her test on Tuesday."
"Went over Mitosis and started photosynthesis. I will be making a quiz to test his knowledge of material we covered the past week."
"This session was a review for the student's upcoming exam. We covered DNA structure and the process of DNA replication. We also talked about some important historical experiments that were involved in proving that DNA was both the genetic material and that it replicated in a semi-conservative manner."
"We covered Mendelian genetics specifically dominance, recessiveness, heterozygosity, homozygosity and Punnett squares. We did a lot of practice with complicated Punnett squares including calculating probability of specific genotypes and phenotypes. I asked him to do some practice Punnett Squares as well as going over the practice test in the back of the chapter. Also, we went over some concepts including codominance, incomplete dominance and blood typing."
"We went over lesson about genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. We discussed genome sequencing and why it is important in today's society and medicine. The student is doing better on her exams and her test taking skills are improving. She is also becoming better at answering questions about the topics she has learned."
"The student had her test over photosynthesis last week. She got an 86 after doing corrections on the test. She said she felt good about the test and the review session and study guide helped a lot. We began covering the next chapter of her book- cell cycle and division. We talked through the phases of the cell cycle and mitosis. I wrote out a study guide as we talked through everything so she would have something to study from before the next test. The student picks up on the concepts very quickly and asks good questions regarding the material. We also reviewed some of the homework she was assigned over the mitosis phases."
"The student did quite well on his last exam. We moved on to the next chapter, Cell Cycle. He already knows the 5 stages of mitosis so we covered the details of each stage. We also discussed chromosome structure and vocab. Lastly, we learned about control: cdk and cyclins."
"Today we covered photosynthesis and cellular respiration. The student generally understood the concepts, but we will focus on the details, particularly the electron transport chain and photosystems. She has a test Tuesday, and we will discuss it during our next session."
"On her last exam she received a B, which is a marked improvement from her previous scores. Tonight we covered ecology, genetic drift, founder/bottleneck effect, and reproduction rates by using the learning tools online questions. She has requested an extra session on Sunday evening in order to review for the exam next Wednesday. I do not have any concerns- she is improving in her information retention and application, question comprehension, and analysis."
"Student and I covered Chapter 13 and 14 of the text book and went over slides from class. We talked about genetics, meiosis, mitosis, reproduction in plants, animals, and bacteria. We began Chapter 14 talking about Mendel, and implications of genetic diversity."
"Today's session went well overall. His organizational skills are improving. I focused on cellular respiration; he's a quick learner so far. I left homework and will focus on photosynthesis and more organizational skills."
"Today we finished covering material on genetic inheritance, epigenetics, and calculations dealing with gene expression. We reviewed one quiz that the student took in between tutoring session which he got a 17/20 on. He was struggling with the concept of epigenetics and chi squares which we reviewed as it related to labs and activities that he had done over the past week. As his exam is approaching next week, I will be forwarding review questions to the student for him to review and we will go over additional questions prior to the test."
