Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I helped the student prepare for an exam on Monday that covered the similarities and differences between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells. I introduced him to the concept of mapping and I created some specific exercises and mini-quizzes to see how he was absorbing the material. We then did more work on photosynthesis."
"We covered different concepts of phylogeny. Through practicing and talking through the reasoning behind different solutions in the class lecture notes, she made progress by the end of the session. I sent an online video clip of a professor who lectured on some of the material we covered and I noted the times in the videos to pay particular attention to, including portions that explained monophyletic, paraphyletic, molecular homologies and also the "molecular clock." With an overabundance of resources available on the internet, it can be overwhelming to choose something to reference, however, in this lecture the professor carefully explained basic principles in a way that I think might be helpful. I am sure that with practice she will succeed with this material."
"The student has been given a study guide by his instructor for the next test. His first test had a lot of essay and short answer questions that he was not expecting. He states that he is really confused by the information in the study guide. First we reviewed the major terminology in the study guide. The first section is about classification of living organisms. We discussed the 5 kingdoms and then used the animal kingdom to discuss the levels of classification. We then reviewed DNA structure. Because the student will likely have essay questions on his next test, for homework, I asked him to describe in detail the 5 kingdoms, and to define binomial nomenclature, polymer, and nucleotide."
