Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over homework problems on trigonometric substitution (specifically, how to set up the right triangle when making the substitution), partial fractions, indeterminate forms, and improper integrals. For the next session, I assigned homework on sequences, series convergence, and the integral test for convergence."
"We covered the geometric meaning of the cross product. We covered the relationship between a tangent line and a curve and how that generalizes to a tangent plane and a surface. I walked her through the process of finding the equation of the tangent plane to a surface at a point. I showed her how it is analogous to the equation of a tangent line to occur. We talked about the relationship between cross products and torque. She already has the algebraic formulas memorized. We looked at three formulas for functions of two variables. For the first function I told her my thought process on figuring out what the graph of that function should look like. For the second function I asked her guided questions to figure out what the graph should look like. For the third, I asked her to look at the formula and then explain to me what the graph should look like. I briefly encouraged her to look into undergraduate research experiences and summer internships in physics. I also encouraged her to learn how to use typesetting software and explained to her how it is the industry-standard for mathematics and physics research."
"During our initial session, the student worked on her homework, which was a worksheet which focused on numbers, operations and quantitative reasoning. She will practice by continuing to work on current assignment prior to next session."
"We went over the student's latest quiz today. It consisted of representing a statement as an integer, ordering from least to greatest, identifying the opposite of a specific integer, identifying quadrants for certain points, plotting points on a coordinated plane and solving integer problems (all operations). The student did great. I then gave him multiple practice problems on this and they both performed very well."
"The student and I focused on multiplication of decimals during this session. It was the concept that her class had covered recently, and she also had participated in a quiz this past week. We also covered word problems concerning multiplication of decimals. We then went over a handout together. I concluded the session by assigning her online videos that can further supplement her learning."
"Today, we covered the remaining questions she had in preparation for her final. Specifically, we covered simplifying and sketching the graphs of functions. In simplifying, she had no issues and was able to complete them on her own. She struggled in how to approach graphing, however, and needed some tips and confidence boosting. Plotting points turned out to be the best approach, while I supplemented her practice with some general tips about the patterns and nature of graphs. I believe she is going to do well on her final."
