Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had a science project due, so I proofread her notes and made sure they were ready to be typed up and turned in with her models. We also worked through several story ideas for her short fiction piece. We discussed the flow of a story and making sure to include a problem that needed to resolved and how to integrate it in to the story. She then worked through her spelling study folder, and we finished, as usual, with her multiplication facts."
"The student and I worked on his first poem, which he seems to enjoy and comes up with great ideas. We talked about varying sentence structure to make the poem more interesting. We then reviewed his math homework, making sure to check our work. Finally, we read."
"We started the session with some introductions, and then I asked him to talk about his current essay writing process and his difficulties with working. He said that he mostly struggles with organization and staying on task. I talked him through a few strategies and then we launched into his writing assignment due on Friday based on Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea." I walked him through the process of brainstorming, thesis drafting (including the parts of a good thesis that limits your scope and keeps you focused). We then started the outline and I reviewed the parts of a strong paragraph that uses quotes to defend assertions. He also expressed difficulty with choosing strong quotes, so I guided him through the process, selecting the first one for him, explaining why it was the best choice, and then having him choose the final two. We then worked on the intro paragraph and I left him to finish the first draft. We will meet on Thursday to revise it before turning it in."
"Today the student and I worked through his English paper, thinking through the topic and finding him some good sources to research. I helped in finding proper resources to use in his paper in order to help him get his outline done."
"Worked on an essay for his History class. Used what he had and worked with him to develop an argument. Then began revising the essay to make sure it all supported his thesis, yet still read like "fact." Worked on analyzing quotes."
"The student and I worked on his monthly homework. We completed 2 out of the 3 assignments. We also worked on some spelling blends and some vocabulary words."
