"Taught the student conic sections and how to determine properties of the function by solving for the directrix, vertex, focus, P, focal width. I went over concepts today by sketching preliminary functions to get a better idea of what information the problem is providing and knowing what additional information we need to solve for. By the end of the session, she understood what most of the conic properties were and how to solve for them. I advised her to begin the review packet prior to class so she had a point of reference when the teacher went over them in class. Today's session, we also discussed what the expectation is moving forward."
"The student and I worked on problems involving areas of shaded regions created by polygons circumscribed inside circles or vice versa."
"Meeting with the student for the first time, it was clear that he is a bright kid who is having trouble making the crowded classroom environment work for him. He seemed to understand the ideas we talked about, and once I gave him some ideas about how to think about the task at hand, he had no problem understanding how to do the math properly. The other problem the student faces is organization. I urged him to get a nice, sturdy folder to keep all of his papers in and to make sure that I got a chance to look at all of them. If he can keep track of these papers, I'm confident that I can give him the understanding he needs to tackle the material."
"Tonight we went over some old tests and quizzes in preparing for a cumulative exam. The student did very well on her last test, so we went over what she had trouble with on all the previous ones. I think she understands the material very well."
"Today, we practiced line segments in circles and reviewed properties of polygons. We also did an algebra review assignment on completing the square (for quadratic equations). The student clearly understood the material while we were doing practice problems, and we discussed her performance on tests. We agreed that she clearly understands things during class but needs to make flashcards, do more practice problems, and carefully check her work before turning in exams and assignments."
"We covered many concepts of circles, including inscribed angles, tangent lines, and applications of the Pythagorean Theorem. The student is quite good at talking herself through problems with a little bit of guidance. Her attitude was attentive and positive. I believe she is going to do very well on her geometry test on Monday."
