Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student reported that he got an A on his last test. We went over the Pythagorean theorem. Using the theorem and similar triangles, the student was able to solve for unknown side lengths of a triangle. I also helped the student go through a section in chemistry. We talked about good note taking strategies and how to recognize important information."
"The student's mother had bought a study guide for him. First, we went over his completed science - good. Next, he finished his geometry math assignment and corrected the completed problems with mistakes. I concentrated on strategies. In each problem he was to circle the important information and underline the question. Then we discussed how he was going to solve the problem. Last, we worked on the study guide. He made some minor mistakes. I again had him circle and underline. We discussed preparing further for the test. I will be tutoring him Wednesday at 4pm and Saturday until the test."
"The student and I worked on another practice test. He took two SAT subject tests yesterday He did well on all sections. On the long math section he only asked for help with one question. He said he submitted his practice test 1 scantron on Friday."
"The student and I reviewed percentage math. She did very well on this in general. Before our next session, she should continue her worksheets on percentage math. We also reviewed geometry concepts. She did well on this; she may begin working on the geometry review packet as well. We spent the last few minutes of the session completing her homework over participial phrases, gerunds, and gerund phrases. She did well with this after my explanation. She came into the session very frustrated, but she left more confident with the material."
"Went over the student's most recent practice test and focused on the language skills section, going back to our original notes about typical usage errors, because this is the most difficult area. Came up with a study plan for the next week which involves going back over the vocabulary, the often-confused words, subject-verb and pronoun agreements, and comparative terms. His vocabulary and verbal scores have been consistently improving. We made a review sheet and I told him to go over it for the next few days and then take Friday off and just get a good night's sleep and focus. I think he'll do great."
"We set out a strategy to review for the student's calculus test this coming Wednesday. We outlined the key topics of focus, but also started going through each section that will be covered. For each section, we created notes to highlight the key takeaways/ thought process necessary to do that section. Then we did an example problem which demonstrated that knowledge. Today, we covered the shell method, work, and integration by parts. Saturday we will cover trig substitution and u-substitution. Then, any time remaining will be spent on practice problems."
