Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I met for a renewed session of SAT tutoring. In this session I tried to assess what he remembered from our last session of tutoring. While he did decently on grammar, he wanted more help on math and reading. After assessing him, it became clear that we will re-learn the curriculum. Before I left I made sure to recommend a book that will be useful to purchase in order to learn the test subjects."
"Today we focused on SAT Verbal, specifically the Vocab type fill in the blank questions. We went through both sorts of questions; The definition type one blank questions in addition to the more complex two blank questions. With the former remembering definitions is very important, and we focused on identifying root words or similar words if we came across an unknown word. With the latter we applied process of elimination by examining each part of the answer choice separately."
"Today we reviewed sentence completion strategies and began working from the arithmetic packet where we covered properties of integers, squares, and square roots. We also covered problems involving simple operations in the abstract, and how to think about problems without an obvious solution. I assigned her 45 minutes of homework from the Arithmetic packet for next time."
"The student and I reviewed the practice essay that she had written since our last meeting. We also finished reviewing her complete practice exam. She is making great improvements in math and in reading comprehension. We will review writing at our next meeting but I expect to see similar improvements in her scores. She will be taking a practice ACT exam so she may not have time to do much practice work but she will complete a practice essay and several practice sessions if time allows."
"When we met on Sunday, the student and I talked about being at the halfway point in our hours together and made a plan for going forward. She said she would prefer to continue to focus on math for some time. We reviewed the results of practice tests she'd taken, and we continued our ongoing review and practice work. She agreed to take a full-length timed practice test in time for our next meeting in order to continue to build her test-taking endurance."
"We focused on a timed reading comprehension section of the SAT today and continued to work on math problems. The student is showing marked improvement on the reading and writing portions, and needs to continue to apply strategies in the math portion to maximize her scores."
"We went over our math section that the student had completed for homework. She did well on the first half, but wanted some help with the more difficult problems later in the section. As we continued on, we started practicing SAT Math, Reading, and a Writing section. We focused on strategies and common problem types."
"The student's essay for today was great. She also did very well on her math and writing sections. We did some reading, vocab, and writing drills, and I asked her to complete 3 practice sections for next time."
"We looked over an essay that the student had written, and evaluated why it was a very strong essay. Overall it was an essay that any grader would have given a good grade on. We explored her new Critical Reading book, and went over the strategies discussed therein. For the immediate future, she will focus on memorizing vocabulary words. Her goal for next week is to memorize 200-300 of the Critical Reading words in her book."
"We went over general tips and approach for the SAT writing section and then had a discussion about the essay. We also briefly discussed the vocabulary part of the critical reading section and we talked about a book to buy. Afterwards, we went to the 5th practice test in the study book and brainstormed for the essay prompt and worked through some problems in the writing section 4. For homework, he will review common grammatical errors on pages 101-102 of the nook. He will also start work on learning new vocabulary words (preferably from the book I recommended). He definitely picked up on the lesson's key concepts and I saw improvement in our practice questions."
"Today, we covered the student's homework first. He did extremely well this week! Our hard work is beginning to pay off. Because of this, I believe he is ready to take a full practice test this week. In addition, we covered the assessment test essay extensively, covering the rubric and how to brainstorm. We're going to pay special attention to his writing for the last remaining sessions."
"We spent the first half of today's session reviewing for the pre test and the second half reviewing for the assessment test. The main topics that arose during the writing practice were misplaced modifiers and number agreement. We also drilled math, discussing applications of the distance formula. We also spent about 10 minutes practicing sentence completion skills. No concerns to report. The plan is for the student to complete extra practice problems for homework in each of the three sections; writing, critical reading, and math."
