Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I were able to complete our review for his math test tomorrow. We covered various subjects, since his math tests usually range in content and chapters covered. We spent most of the time reviewing math with logarithms and exponents and how to convert between the two. I also explained how to solve logarithms of any base using base 10 calculations. With each example successfully completed, the student grew more confident and quick in his calculations. We also covered normal distributions, Gaussian distributions, and bell graphs. He was familiar with finding the average of a given data set, and I was able to help him solve for variance and the standard deviation as well. I mentioned everyday applications of this kind of math that I have seen in industry as well as similar calculations concerning professional sports. We covered piece-wise equations with specific examples, graphing the functions with given equations and intervals, and also the reverse, writing equations and intervals for given graphs. I explained how very common, everyday occurrences can be described using piece-wise functions to further clarify the necessity and usage of such graphs. I asked him to review our examples of piece-wise functions on his own time, and he assured me that he would do so. We were able to compile four pages of notes for him to study on his own later tonight as well and one detailed flashcard."
"He is starting series and sequences. It is inherently dependent on the student's ability to recognize patterns with numbers. Success at this is a matter of neurological wiring but I did give the student some tips on how to recognize patterns. He has able to slowly get through the easier and medium examples but was challenged with the advanced ones. We will work on the harder ones once he gets his footing with the easier ones."
"We continued reviewing conics, ellipses, and hyperbolas. The student should do well on his final exam if he continues to practice and memorize standard equations."
"The student and I had a great session today. We reviewed some of the work we did last week in relation to linear equations and matrices. Then we moved to talking about series. We spent time developing and talking about the language of series. We also talked about how to approach solving some of the sequence problems. Good luck with class this week!"
"Since the student has a test this week, we spent the session going over the review sheet. Most of the questions have to with rational functions and involve either polynomial division or finding range/domain & VA/HA."
"Today's session covered an introduction to the unit circle and conversion between radians and degrees. We marked off certain "stopping points" on the unit circle to represent 0, 30, 45, 60, 90, 180, 270 and 360 degrees in terms of radians (0, (PI)/6, (PI)/4, etc.). The student was able to quickly convert between radians and degrees and read values off the unit circle."
