Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued working on the critical reading section by completing more sentence completion and passage-based questions. As far as the former goes, he really improved from our last session in terms of understanding how these questions operate. As a result, he went from answering only 20% correct the last time to answering at about 75%."
"The student and I worked on the science section of the ACT, which she had not had much exposure to since the SAT does not have a science section. We went over her first practice test that she had completed previously, discussing why she had incorrectly answered problems and how best to solve those problems. She then completed the science section of another practice test (from her book - practice test 3) with the time and testing conditions simulated. The science section involves reading several (up to 7) passages describing experiments or scenarios and interpreting them to answer questions, so a quiet environment is necessary to effectively complete it in the time allowed. She did moderately well on the section, and we went over all the questions she missed. She is able to understand and answer nearly every question correctly when she has time to think about it - her main goal should be practicing the pacing of the test so that she can work through the section quickly. I gave her the solutions for a sample science section her friend had photocopied from another source, so between that section and the remaining practice tests in the book she should have ample material to practice on before her test."
"In this session we covered all three sections of the SAT. For the math section we worked through a practice exam section. The student is strong in the basics and he is really quick in solving the beginning questions. He struggles a little more with geometry and word problems because it is difficult for him to translate the problems into algebraic equations. We will review formulas and practice translating word problems more in future sessions. For the reading section we worked through practice passages in a practice exam section. He is great at understanding and solving the detail questions. He struggles with main idea and tone. When we go over the passages I always have him tell me his impression of the author and the type of passage it is to practice understanding these main idea questions. More practice will help with this concept. We also practiced a writing section. He is fairly good at recognizing errors in a sentence and understanding the grammar rules that are being broken. However, he could be a bit more careful when reading through the questions."
