"Today the student and I went over the practice exam (#8) that he did during our time away. Comparing his current results to his PSAT scores, his current score on the practice exam is great improvement. However, there is still room for improvement. One area that brought down his score disproportionately (for the math and critical reading sections, the student mainly missed a question or two evenly throughout the different components) was the identify-the-error if there is one of various underlined choices in the writing section. In the one area, he missed 7 questions. I am recommending that he concentrate exclusively on this area in his work before our next session because it will result in the single greatest score growth based on this practice exam."
"For this session, the student took half of another practice test - the math and English sections. She was concerned about the math and led me through which problems she needed help most with. It is clear that often she knows how to apply the mathematical concepts, however, often she does not know how to approach problems. I gave her some hints and skills in how to identify what time of problem she is looking at and what specifically she is being asked for. We did some work multiplying polynomials and practiced that for a while, since she struggled with that concept. I then started taking her through key concepts I thought were missing on the math section. Since she is taking the test this Saturday, I gave her some last minute hints and tricks on identifying triangles, multiplying polynomials, and other shortcuts. She is already registered to take the test again in January and I think we will absolutely need that time to continue preparing. Sessions with this student have been very spread out, so outside studying and ACT work is absolutely necessary to see an improvement in scores. I wish her luck on her first attempt!"
"The student completed some practice problems from the English and math sections that I sent him. We went over some of those that he missed to review strategies and go over some of the concepts he had trouble with. On English, we discussed using the info surrounding the underlined portion in order to identify appropriate verb tense and punctuation use. On math, we reviewed timing strategies and went over steps to address word problems. I also had him complete practice problems over probability. I introduced the reading section and some strategies to help with timing. We also looked at the different question types before he attempted a practice passage. He'll need to complete some additional practice to get used to the amount of available time. We finished by going over the science section. He showed good improvement at identifying what the question is asking for and understanding the relationship between the data. He should review math content and practice timing strategies before test day."
