Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I covered a few hundred years of art history starting with the high Renaissance and the Renaissance in the North. He was very comfortable with paintings and sculptures by Renaissance masters (Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael), so we flew through those pretty quickly. Next, we turned our attention to altarpieces from the Netherlands and work of the Flemish masters. Some of these altarpieces are densely loaded with iconography, so we read some scenes slowly and I identified the religious figures in each work. Also, this work occurred contemporaneous with the Italian Renaissance but with completely alternative treatments and styles of the same events. During this time, artists explored medias from tempera to oil, acrylic and printmaking. Next we focused on Baroque and Rococo, styles that are very visually recognizable, but difficult to describe. I asked the student to describe them, and he was able to do so through the paintings, pointing out content from each work. We concluded our session with characteristics of Romanticism, Ingres, and Orientalism."
"The student accomplished a lot in this second of two one-hour sessions. We worked specifically on preparing for the longer essay portions of the AP Art History Exam. The student had completed his assignment for this session, which was to respond in essay form to a sample question from last year's test. I went through his response with him, paragraph by paragraph, noting what he did correctly, and suggesting further edits and additions to remember for the actual test tomorrow. In all, the student is very motivated to achieve a passing score on the exam with the knowledge and skills he has."
"The student and I finished reading chapter 3 in her theology book and began working on chapter 4. We also did the chapter 3 vocabulary and main points. She is going to work on the end-of-chapter assignment between now and her next session. She did a great job!"
