Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we did a complete overview of math, reading, science, and social studies. The student has a full understanding of each test and is able to departmentalize the reporting categories in each content. I had hoped to give her a pre assessment; however, after some reflection, I walked her through several 8th grade math state assessment questions. I provided her with a problem solving strategy board. She now has an action plan of attack for every math problem."
"Both students I worked on an Excel project documenting nutrition components of their diet and also from their favorite foods and restaurants. They both seemed a bit disorganized for this session so this took up some of our time to work on the assigned project. Both boys are very smart and I know they have the potential to do great in their math class!"
"Today we studied radicals and their various properties. The student did not have a solid base to work from, so we moved a bit slower than usual. Her latest packet is due on Tuesday. We have less time than I would like, as I want to really hunker down to ensure that she gets the material. I assigned a portion of her packet as homework, and if we have time next session I would like to reiterate some of the core concepts that we went over today."
"This session the student and I reviewed his first homework assignment for algebra II. Having gone over that lesson in the book when we started, he only hesitated once and was able to finish it all quickly. He writes cleanly and had his answers organized, but we were unsure what format the teacher would want it in. After his homework was finished, we reviewed what we covered last week as it was a bit rough when we went over it the first time. The review went quick and painlessly; the student had no problem this time. We also covered a little bit into the next session before our session ended. All in all we covered writing equations and relationships from word problems, solving equations, and translations, compression, stretching and reflections of graphs. Great session!"
"We covered quadratic equations for an upcoming test including finding the vertex form of the equation from the standard form of the equation, solving equations by both completing the square and quadratic formula, and using the discriminant to find how many solutions and type. The student needed most help with the quadratic formula since that was the last of the material covered before the test. She knows the material extremely well and is very pleasant to work with. We completed both the end of chapter review and test review for her Friday test. At the end of the evening I showed her how to use her calculator so she could verify her answers quickly. I will be meeting with her next week for sure so I will be anxious to hear how she does on her test."
"We went over the chapter 1 test review. The student's biggest area of growth is her self-confidence, otherwise she is excellent at showing all of her work and asking questions when she feels stuck. She can clearly explain concepts after they have been taught to her and she can apply them to problems. Her politeness is also refreshing, as there were times when I led her through a more challenging approach to a problem and she was able to understand it despite there being an easier method (for example, using the distance formula to find an endpoint rather than the midpoint formula). I am really excited to continue working with her and building her confidence to match her superb ability."
