Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on percentages and decimals. The student needs help with these concepts. We worked on strategies and shortcuts to help improve his time and accuracy. He was left with a practice test for the verbal section."
"We went over a practice test the student did for homework. He did well on it. We focused on a couple of math concepts and strategies for synonym questions."
"Began with a concept-based survey of the skills tested by ACT Math; she perceived this as her strongest subject, so we started here to allow her to acclimate to the tutoring process, with our goal being to mine every possible point from an "easier" pool. We completed the concept survey very quickly, as she was able to solve problems from each tested subset without difficulty. Moved to guided practice to scaffold proper multiple choice approach and gauge understanding of word problems (based on her performance with the initial exercises, I purposely drew from more difficult problems to see how far we could stretch her abilities). Completed 30 ACT Math problems with no discernible issues in recognizing the problem, converting from prose to mathematical operations, or making proper calculations. Expecting very high achievement on this section; further practice will serve to keep focus and practice "backup plans" in case of any possible test-day memory issues. Will math on next session."
"Today, the student and I continued our work on the Math section of the ACT. We were able to get through 14 problems in the hour, and hopefully, we will continue to improve on that number. We will continue to improve his math knowledge and work to get quicker on working through the problems."
"Today, we went over mostly math, but we also did a bit of reading (specifically prose fiction and humanities passages) and science (specifically the conflicting hypothesis passage). Everything went pretty well! We ran into some tough questions along the way, but I'm feeling confident in general about progress towards getting a higher score."
"The student is brilliant and is always a joy to work with. We touched up on tricky English concepts that come up on the ACT. I have assigned a more general math review and several sections as homework. I will bring a TI calculator for his use on the test."
"This session, the student and I completed the reading section of his ACT practice booklet and began the first practice test in the ACT prep guide, finishing the English section and starting the math. In terms of the reading section, he should learn to avoid rushing through both passages and questions in order to ensure he adequately understands them. Similarly, he could also work on his ability to skim passages to isolate relevant information when necessary. We will continue to practice these areas. As for the English section, he should primarily focus on comma usage and comprehension of the passage as a whole. In math, he would likely benefit most from double checking his answers to more complex problems, and making sure he knows what the question is asking."
"Today, we finished up the Science section by covering the strategies to use to successfully approach a conflicting viewpoints passage. After reviewing the general strategies for the science section, the student took a science section as a practice test. She had an increase of 7 points from her previous ACT science score."
"The student and I worked on a practice assessment exam. We covered verbal analogies, verbal classification, number analogies, number puzzles, number series, figure matrices, paper folding, etc. The student was very focused with all the material that was covered, and he was very interactive during the session. The student asked questions when he was not sure what the answer was. The student showed that he understands the material and that he knows how to get the final answer."
"Today, we worked on finding f(x), algebraic functions, coordinate planes, circles, radius, length of arc, area of sector, and clock math. The student was very receptive. I left her with the Pass 1, Pass 2 strategy for the ACT math."
"Today, we covered practice problems and strategies from all sections of the ACT. I have seen significant improvement in the student's ability to strategize for questions. He needs some additional practice for the reading and science sections in particular, but he is already getting the majority of problems correct. He should continue to take practice tests for his weakest sections."
"We worked on the essay this session. This is definitely one of the student's strong suits, and she's really good at articulating her ideas and analyzing other people's essays. I think going forward, the most challenging part will be timing and doing well under pressure. We will continue to work on these. If she could complete a full essay by next session, that would be great."
