Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was a very productive session, in which she has shown that she has been reviewing and doing the assigned work during a busy schedule. We went over almost all two sections of a diagnostic exam I had assigned her the week before. On the Verbal reasoning portion she got 19/20 correct, which is fantastic for a preliminary result. Out of the ones she guessed on, we reviewed the words she did not know. She is very good at utilizing elimination strategies in order to get to the answer, which is something that is very useful for the ISEE Upper level exam. We then went on to the quantitative reasoning section. She needed help with math concepts she was not exposed to previously such as the distributive property, FOIL, rules of inequalities, and converting from decimal to percents and vice versa. We went over some rules regarding these topics, then she redid the problems on the diagnostic which she had left blank or guessed on, and for most of them she understood how to attain the right answer. We then went over some geometry formulas pertaining to circles, and she learned the acronym for order of operations in expressions. She has been showing good effort. With more practice with problems involving different signs in the math sections, she will be less prone to making mistakes. I assigned her the rest of the diagnostic test to complete for next week as well as links to reading and quantitative section questions for extra practice. We will incorporate timing within the next few session."
"Since the student will be taking the ISEE upper level test next Saturday, this was our last tutoring session. Today, he completed his fifth practice test. After we reviewed that test, he completed another ISEE practice test. His scores in all four sections of the test have consistently improved, and he is well prepared for the actual test on Saturday. It has been a pleasure tutoring him. He is always very attentive and on task during our tutoring sessions. Thus, our lessons are always very productive."
"The student's progress over the last few weeks has been remarkable. In preparation for today's session, she took a timed practice test. She had a nearly perfect score on Reading and a strong score on Verbal Reasoning. Her errors for Verbal reasoning were all vocabulary difficulties. In addition to these sections, she took most of a practice Math Achievement section. Her accuracy on this section was remarkable. The only concept that she had difficulty with was a complex average question. I taught her the "circle diagram"ù method for solving average-questions, and she was able to solve the problem quickly. Her biggest difficulty is the time pressure of the exam. She was not able to answer many of the questions during the allotted time. When we went through the questions she skipped, she was able to answer all of them correctly. Because her accuracy has improved so much in math, the focus for our last two sessions will be speed. Tomorrow we will do timed drills for math and quantitative reasoning."
