Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This week the student and I reviewed protists and fungi. The student is concerned the most with the depth of the information, and the specificity so we created a graphic organizer together. I will be sending her some practice questions so she will be familiar with the types of questions she will see on the assessment. She has a quiz tomorrow."
"We discussed asexual vs sexual reproduction before honing in on sexual reproduction and how the female body prepares for pregnancy. We discussed the menstrual cycle and the hormones involved along with the effects the hormones have on the body. We went over the female organs involved in the reproductive process. I helped with some homework questions pertaining to the development of the embryo in the uterus. We then moved onto cell division and mitosis at the student's request. We went through each step and what happens during each. Then went over meiosis and the difference between it and mitosis. I emphasized how the chromosome number is halved and why during the process."
"Today, we talked over a project that the student had to do for her biology class. The project required her to make a food web based on a marine ecosystem in San Diego county. She picked La Jolla Cove. I helped her do the research to find out what the major predators, prey, and producers were in that ecosystem and together we figured out how everything related in the food chain. This was a really fun project because it is an area that is very close to where the student lives and so she was able to think about animals she had seen there (such as seals) and learn about animals she didn't know lived there (such as barracudas and squid)."
