"Began practicing for the student's upcoming high school placement test. Reviewed exponents, rational equations, and quadratics."
"The student has been working on making progress on her math homework. We discussed manipulating polynomial expressions, focusing on long division and synthetic division."
"The student has a test coming up, so we worked on z scores when working with proportions and regular means. We practiced finding the mean and standard deviation when using proportions and also how to identify what formula to use with each type of problem that we covered. She seemed pretty on top of the homework once we reviewed when to use which formulas."
"The student and I mostly focused on multi-step word problems. She has a lot of trouble with this type of problem, and she often forgets what information she needs to solve the problem. To address this, we focused on identifying the information needed and writing it in a short, easy to read list. Though she still needs help working on this type of problem, she was making some progress. We also spent a little bit of time reviewing rounding, and she has retained most of this information. Overall she has a pretty good grasp of this concept. She maintained a good attitude while working on math and was able to stay focused throughout the session, even though some of the word problems were really difficult for her."
"We started out today's session with timed practice questions again. I want to teach her good test taking skills that she can apply in school. The student does a wonderful job at pacing herself and double checking her work now. I have seen great improvements in her. We worked through several word problems today where she had to decide the appropriate order of operations to use. She struggled a bit with these questions and I left her with a work sheet to complete for extra practice. We also worked on place values today. I want to move onto working with fractions with her since that is what she is learning in school, but I do not want to do that until she is proficient with decimals and place values. I recommend that she works on place values outside of tutoring hours."
"Today, the student and I worked through her homework problems, all of which revolved around relating proportions to graphs. We worked on using the graphs to give us important information, such as the constant of proportionality. As a continuation from last session, we practiced using the equation of a line (y=kx), in addition to the graph, to help us solve the problems. Later, we began working on concepts she has missed since the beginning of the year. Specifically, we worked on adding and subtracting negative numbers, reciprocals and multiplying decimals. For reference, I left her with a study guide that lists the rules for adding and subtracting negative numbers. This session, she worked on physically writing down each step of her solution in order to eliminate errors."
