Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This week, my student and I covered the beginning of taxonomy, including definitions, important concepts, and different methods of organizing organisms. She had the most difficulty with remembering the different organizational systems, so we used practice problems to add clarity and repetition. She will be taking a quiz next week, and we will assess our progress in this new unit then."
"We covered genetics, including types of dominance, inheritance patterns, X-linked traits, DNA structure, and protein synthesis from a DNA code. We went through a workbook and discussed problems and definitions. She is just starting to memorize and understand concepts and so she is just working on that. We also spoke briefly about her test grades and a possible way to improve test-taking."
"The student has a Biology exam on Friday, so we went over his study guide. We discussed meiosis and mitosis at length, chromosomes, cell cycle, and cancer at the cellular level. He had a good understanding of the material but we went through the study guide and clarified all the topics he was unsure about or had questions on. We recorded all our notes on his laptop, so he'll be able to study them before his test. I feel confident that he will do well on his exam."
"The student and I began preparing for her final biology exam today by working through the study sheet that her teacher provided her. We started with the material that she felt the least comfortable with -- i.e. the material that was covered at the beginning of the year (the molecular basis of biology). I have asked her to review this material on her own before we have our next session on Tuesday."
"Today we drilled questions from a practice test that I brought in on meiosis, mitosis and the cell cycle. The student answered the questions, and we discussed the topics that she was still having trouble with. We also reviewed DNA replication and transcription."
"The student took several timed tests today. While she did not know all concepts required to do well on the assessment exam, her analytical and critical skills played a huge part in her getting the correct answers. I would suggest she really focus on learning the concepts or brushing up on them."
