"We began with a 6th grade grammar warm up. We also discussed a book, The Giver, that I had let the student borrow to read. We then did two five-minute writes together, with him choosing the 16 words we would use. I then instructed on organization and pre-writing, with use of a graphic organizer. We began to brainstorm for a persuasion piece and completed the graphic organizer for that piece."
"Last session getting the student ready for the ACT. Went over practice problems for all sections (including planning an essay) and general test-taking strategies (good breakfast, plenty of sleep, layers of clothing, etc.). I'm confident she'll do well on the test, and I wish her all the best. Great session."
"1. Reviewed how to convert English to Algebra and how to use Algebra to express patterns 2. Reviewed order of operations and exponents with the student and assigned him some focused review problems from the textbook as preparation for the next Algebra review session. The student seemed encouraged to complete the assigned problems and to continue to work on meeting his weekly goals."
"The student and I had a really great session, the work on the essays was excellent and definitely showed the fundamentals we were looking for. All the essay scores went up by at least 2 points on the 12 point scale, and really mostly more than that. Then we got a good math review in and started to see the big wholes in the geometry section, we started to open those up and make headway into filling in what was missing. We ended in a great spot with lots of work left to do."
"Reviewed solving systems of equations by graphing, substitution and elimination as well as systems of inequalities. Reviewed how to solve word problems involving systems of equations and linear programming. Also reviewed the determinant of a matrix. This is all for the student's test today in Algebra 2. Ended the session by reviewing free body diagrams for physics."
"We discussed interpretation of information from x/y coordinate graphs. We discussed variables and x and y are interpreted from an f(x) function as well as its graphical representation. The student was able to grasp the latter concept and was able to interpret graphs with some initial guidance."
"The student and I went over her current course work which was finding inverse functions and composition functions. We practiced finding various composition functions from f(x) and g(x), such as (fog)(x) and (gof)(x). I explained to her how to find the domain of these functions as well. We also covered finding inverse functions, their domains, and how to check that you have accurately found the inverse function. She seemed well prepared for her exam tomorrow."
"The student was pleased with his score of 27 on the practice test he took this morning. His score was consistent throughout the sections, and he had enough time for everything except math. His accuracy on the questions he answers is excellent. We continue to review time-saving strategies in hopes that he can get to a few more questions. He doesn't seem resistant while we're talking about it, but he doesn't use these strategies when he does the work. He wrote them down today, so I hope that he will use them next week."
"The student and I reviewed the last portion of the difficult math section of the SAT book during this session. She agreed to complete another practice SAT for comparison purposes in preparation for our next session."
"Finished math worksheets on addition and subtraction problems. Focused on the wording of the word problems to determine if it was adding or subtracting. Completed 2 worksheets on graphing, and learning to read a graph."
"The student and I continued on today to begin practicing solving simple algebraic equations and inequalities. She understands what she needs to do well enough, but mixes up steps or terms sometimes. I will be making sure to help keep working on this."
"Reviewed all material to be covered on the Chapter 9 exam including polynomials, finding the area when using lengths defined in polynomial form, simplifying expressions with multiple variables and coefficients, and solving linear equation systems."
