Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Since the student was caught up in math, we focused mostly on Spanish today. For a few minutes we reviewed radicals and how to simplify radical expressions. The homework that he had for Spanish involved asking questions. Therefore, we focused mostly on the structure of questions and question words. We also reinforced pronunciation topics such as the fact that the H is silent."
"Today we worked on core concept review in preparation for the assessment test next week. Included in the review was multiplication facts, multiplying 2 digit by 3 digit numbers, dividing by one digit, multiplying and dividing decimals, calculating lapsed time, and solving word problems."
"We continued to review for the student's test which was pushed back to tomorrow. We went over a new packet of review questions with some more difficult conceptual problems. All problems were solving radical equations. We reviewed factoring and solving rational equations with radical expressions."
"We first went over the reading passages I assigned for homework. We talked about answer types including ones that were traps, too narrow, too broad, and out of scope. We talked about various strategies, such as writing keywords in the margins. We then went over scrambled paragraphs. For two out of three, I had printed each sentence on a strip of paper and had him arrange them while reasoning out loud. He did very well and has improved a lot since the beginning. I assigned him a practice test which included answers and explanations, a mini-test, and a few reading passages."
"The student and I spent most of the session reviewing for her math test over polynomials. She made a lot of progress in terms of fixing little mistakes in the quadratic equation but still needs to practice other methods of factoring. We also started working on a history assignment involving Chinese history."
"Today the student and I covered the integrated reasoning section - how to read a chart/table/etc. We did grammar review on tricky pronouns like everyone (singular). The student needs to work on finding the correct material to focus on in a reading comp section and time management. His attitude was good. I discussed variable speed reading and skimming for key words with the student, as well as time management so that more time is spent on earlier questions. For next session we will work on speed writing for the AWA."
