"We did a worksheet about economic equality. The student had to calculate GINI coefficients and POM for different years' economic information. She will have to turn in a final project similar to today's worksheet."
"Today, the student and I got to work on some vocabulary. We sat down with a list of 7th-grade level vocab words and discussed their parts of speech and definitions, paying close attention to root words and prefixes/suffixes to help determine meaning. I also made sure to explain the different connotations of vocabulary words for which he already knew a synonym of some sort. The student himself seemed pretty interested in the words, and he had little trouble with the definitions or explanations I provided."
"First session. ACT prep session, talked about the differences between ACT and SAT and expectations. Spent the majority of the time talking about the format of the English section and working through practice problems in the English section. Good session."
"The student and I went over her "self-test" for chapter 2, her missed questions on her quiz, and discussed some tips she could use to make sure she slows down when doing math and reads carefully. Mostly decimal work."
"Met with the student to do more test prep. She's totally on top of her math game so we're putting that aside for now and working on the reading and vocab sections. She completed a reading section and seemed to miss a lot of questions dealing with main ideas but she's not having any difficulty dealing with time. We did the vocabulary section and discussed a lot of words. I don't think she'll remember most so I'm making a list of ones that might appear again."
"During this session we worked on geometric sequences and predicting the sums of terms when given a group of numbers with a similar distance between them. We worked through the student's homework problems together and other sample problems."
"The student and I focused on the Science sections today. She completed the practice test section before our session and we reviewed her answers. We discussed techniques to improve her comprehension of the passages and graphs. The student struggled a little with understanding graphs and multiple step hypotheses. We worked on slowing down to take the time to understand everything which should speed up her time in answering each individual question."
"The student and I worked on a Spanish worksheet for her science class. This time the worksheet was about the difference between insects and spiders. The text of the worksheet gave us an opportunity to cover some new vocabulary and to discuss further the concept of a reflexive. We also went over the conjugations for the two verbs."
"We went over a practice test the student took. He knows all the material, but we went back and reviewed strategies in Math. We also went over some more Verbal questions."
"The student and I went over the reading section to pinpoint exactly where she needed the most help. We discovered that she wasn't reading some questions carefully enough and not maximizing her use of time in each passage. We also went over the science reasoning section and she had a much easier time with that. We will continue to work on reading."
"SAT Prep: vocab quiz; went over the distinction between "that" vs. "which"; discussed paragraph improvement questions; went over several paragraph improvement questions; assigned homework for next session."
"We discussed wave mechanics, focusing on the basic mathematical relationship between frequency, wavelength, and wave speed. We also spent some time discussing intensity, and we did some problems from his homework set. The student was a little foggy on the definitions of transverse waves and longitudinal waves, so I cleared these up for him."
