Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has shown that he can apply material learned from previous sessions while doing practice problems, and with continued practice he will be prepared for his upcoming test. Good Job on that! Today we covered a wide variety of topics. We went over the Verbal Reasoning and Reading Comprehension portions of the ISEE Diagnostic I had assigned him for homework. He is writing down all the words he has never seen before and will review them. In the Math section, we went over decimals and percentages, introduction to inequalities, and the formulas tested on this exam in regards to circles and triangles. He needs to be wary of the negative and positive signs; he does the right order of operations but the signs lead him to the wrong answer. With more practice and caution with signs, he should have no problem on the math that is tested. He is definitely comfortable with the format of the exam. Before the next session he will do practice sections for the Math, Reading Comprehension, and Essay portion of the exam, which we will also review. He quickly grasps the concepts, which is a good sign in his test taking abilities."
"Today, I worked with Student 1 and Student 2 on essay writing strategies for their assessments. We started by outlining an essay prompt together, and I taught them two methods for brainstorming: the paint splatter and the idea web. We talked about timing and outlining, and then I had both boys write a quick timed essay based on the prompt. Student 2 did well with writing and timing. After walking the boys through those essays, they wrote one more timed essay, this time without guidance. Lastly, we did a practice drill on vocabulary and grammar, which we will go over next session. By the end of the lesson, they had already improved at making their answers imaginative and persuasive. Doing more timed practice essays over the coming weeks, will prepare them for formulating quick outlines and solid essays on the test days."
"Since the student took a practice exam over the weekend, we reviewed the vocab that she missed as well as going through a reading comprehension section that she didn't do well on. Then we worked on more vocab. I am still trying to impress on her that vocab is not just memorizing words, but understanding their context and when to use them."
