"The student and I spent the first half hour working through analogies flashcards. I had him describe the relationship between the words before we even looked at the answers. The section we worked through was dealing with relationships between parts and wholes. We worked through several problems and the student built his confidence in this area. We transitioned into geometry, where we talked about properties of triangles and finding missing pieces of different kinds of triangles. The student did great!"
"For this session, the student and I focused entirely on the Verbal Reasoning session. We worked on 20 questions. I thought that time management might be an issue for him, so I decided to time him and ask him to eliminate choices and answer the questions in less than 2 minutes. This seemed to help him. We went through all of the words from the practice test that I thought he should know. For those he didn't know, I had him write the words down and plan to look them up later. I also asked him to come up with sentences for each of the words. He often had forgotten the definition of the word already so I hope that he will eventually know them by heart. Next time we will work on the analogies and math portion of the test."
"Today, the student and I went over a lot of geometry concepts, particularly how to find the areas of spheres and cylinders. We also did a lot of work on triangles, which will be very useful for when the student takes the test. We also worked on converting fractions to decimals, and vice-versa. We then moved on to the reading section, and I think she did a great job with the skimming techniques that we've discussed, which help her avoid getting bogged down on any individual questions; as a result, she was able to complete the questions in a much shorter amount of time."
