Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I reviewed the basics of the ACT English test and some important things to note (how long to take on each question, the two categories they are organized in, etc.). I also told him some basic tips (such as circle the hard questions for later). We developed a schedule for the following weeks because the student will be taking the ACT again in March. We plan to thoroughly review at least 5 English practice tests before then and to cover any grammar topics he feels uncomfortable with. I gave him a list of prep books to buy. We ended the session with going over each of our "homeworks" (I will be sending the student a reading list of books that will help him feel more comfortable with the ACT passages)."
"Continued to practice the math section, focusing on word problems. Assigned him to practice some essay sections."
"Based on the students homework results, we spent the majority of this session focusing on Critical Reading, the essay, and 3D geometry. For Critical Reading, we went over the 4-part passage structure, and applied it to a couple of passages from his homework. After this, we went over the questions he missed in his homework on those passages. For the essay, we expanded on the strategy introduced last time. First, only read the "Assignment" part of the essay question, and ignore the stuff in the box above it. Then, if in the course of constructing the outline, he gets stuck, use the writing in the box to formulate topic sentences for the essay. For the 3D shapes, we went over how to divide a 3D object up into triangles, and then use the Pythagorean Theorem on those sub-triangles to calculate distances between vertices, etc. His homework for next time is to continue the 5 minutes/day free writing, but this week try to incorporate 1 or 2 vocab words into each day's writing, more vocab, do 3 more verbal practice sections from test #1 in the blue book, and one more math practice section from test #1 in the blue book."
