Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was a great session. The student is doing well with the vocabulary that we've built for her thus far. The words we've gone over seem to be sticking long term, which is the goal. I don't want her to memorize a definition, with no personal meaning to her, and then forget it after I ask her what they mean a week later. I told her that she needs to dedicate a short time of her day, everyday, to using all of her new vocabulary in sentences (either verbally or written), and I really want her to start taking some words and teaching them to friends and family. Near the end of our session, I had her repeat the process of teaching me some words, and she was able to do that quickly and confidently. I told her to keep doing that daily so that we can build her confidence before the test."
"I decided to go over some geometric concepts first, namely 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 triangles, which she never went over before. I thoroughly went over the concepts with many examples and a couple worksheets. I then integrated those concepts with circles when we did worksheets involving finding lengths of arcs and chords (using triangles, etc.). Along the way, I figured out that she is quite uncomfortable and needs review on fractions, radicals, and exponents. Afterwards, we took a mock session of the mathematics section, which didn't go so well. She could have timed it a bit better (meaning she could have spent less time on difficult questions and more time on getting easier questions) because she missed about 10 questions because of a lack of time. Many of the other questions she missed involved factorization, FOIL, or interpreting statistical concepts."
"Today the student completed her second ISEE -- Upper Division -- Practice Test. Specifically, she completed Sections #3 and #4. On Section #3, Reading Comprehension, she correctly answered 29 out of the 36 questions (81% -- her best score on this section to date -- Bravo!). On Section #4, Mathematics Achievement, she got 26 out of the 45 questions correct (58%). Today, while working on Section #4, she ran out of time and had to guess on a few of the questions. I informed her that if this should happen, choose one letter (A, B, C, or D) and have this be your "guess" answer for the entire ISEE Exam. We will also work on time saving techniques in our next session. She completed today's tutoring session by completing her second practice essay. She is a very bright student. During our next tutoring session, we will go over / review all the incorrect answers from her second practice test. She is always attentive and focused on the task at hand. Thus, our tutoring sessions are always very productive."
