Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, we reviewed the concepts that the student's next exam will cover. He identified that his weakest area is solving trigonometric word problems, so we spent a large amount of time covering this area. I have noticed an improvement in his ability to solve these problems. He is more adept at making diagrams, which capture the important information in the question. I told him to carefully draw pictures, as he reads the question, and to read each problem slowly so that he does not make an error. Next, we practiced drawing terminal rays and solving for all six trigonometric functions. We then practiced how to find trigonometric functions if given the answer to one function. Finally, we covered how to determine all of the possible angles (from 0-360 degrees) of a trigonometric function if given the solution. Overall, he did an excellent job and I can tell he is becoming more confident in his problem-solving abilities."
"The student and I talked about his last Chinese lesson. He feels comfortable with them, so I found some more intermediate level reading material for him to expand his vocabulary and reading ability."
"The student worked on the first 24 problems of a state assessment from a past year. She got 13 problems correct and 11 problems incorrect. In the cases where she missed problems, about half of the time, she missed the problem due to not reading the problem carefully, although she basically knew what to do. In the other half of the time, she did not know how to solve the problem. We'll work on those concepts in our next session."
"Today, the student and I worked on cumulative frequency, estimated mean, and estimated standard deviation. She did especially well with estimated standard deviation. She was diligent as we worked. She identified and reviewed the topics that will be covered on her in-class quiz. She also identified questions she will ask her teacher in the preparation of her in-class quiz."
"Today, we worked on a study guide for an upcoming test that covers writing and solving exponential equations, basic statistics, the FOIL method and factoring polynomials. The student struggled with factoring initially, but with practice, she seems to have gotten better with the subject matter."
"Tonight we worked on completing the square equations in algebra. The student is really getting the math that he is working on and doing quite well with it. After the math work he wrote a half-page essay on Newton's Third Law of Motion. He is doing really well with the work we have been covering."
